SMHB Sdn Bhd (SMHB) celebrated its 60^th Anniversary in 2022 and presently the firm still stands as one of the few firms established immediately after independence that is not only still present but growing both in terms of turnover and size.

Building on a strong foundation, the firm aspires to set itself apart from other consultants by providing innovative engineering which will provide the appropriate solutions that meet the clients’ needs as well as being beneficial to the public as a whole. This will be achieved by providing the best option in engineering concept, utilizing state-of-the-art designs and cost-effective solutions – without compromising on quality.

These aspirations combined, formulates the firm’s Vision, “Innovative Engineering for a Better World.”

To date, SMHB has successfully completed more than 1000 projects, these being the credentials to the firm’s success. Of these projects, 78 are dams, 65 water treatment plants, 23 sewage treatment plants, 2,800 km of pipeline, 40 drainage, flood mitigation and irrigation works, and 32 rail, road, highway and bridge projects. This achievement was realised through strategic alliances with associate firms, clients and specialists, and most importantly by a strong team of competent in-house expertise. The cooperation of those involved has elevated SMHB as one of the leading engineering consultant firms in Malaysia.

On 29 September 2017, HSS Engineers Berhad (HEB) had proposed the acquisition of SMHB Engineering Sdn. Bhd. (SENG) which holds 30% equity in SMHB with an exclusive teaming arrangement with the firm.

The acquisition exercise of SMHB was eventually concluded on 28 March 2018, hence SENG became 100% subsidiary of HEB and all the firm’s assets and employees were transferred to SENG. HEB through SENG held 30% of shares in SMHB. SENG is now the operating company while SMHB is an associate company.

Datuk Ir. Teo Chok Boo and Ir. Prem Kumar A/L M Vasudevan of SENG were subsequently appointed as Executive Directors to the Board of Directors of HEB on 15 May 2018, followed by Ir. Syed Mohamed Adnan as Alternate Director to Datuk Ir. Teo on 21 February 2019, thus sealing the agreement at the top management level.

SMHB undertakes technical investigations, economic, institutional, and financial studies, preparation of master plans, feasibility reports, engineering designs and contract administration, environmental impact assessment, project management, supervision of construction, factory testing and commissioning. The firm also undertakes due diligence technical audits of existing plants and facilities, safety inspection of dams, upgrading and rehabilitation of existing plants and advise on operation and maintenance issues.

SMHB specialises in water, waste management, drainage, flood mitigation, environment, transport and infrastructure engineering services. The firm makes available professional resources in the planning, design and management of infrastructure projects for the past years. SMHB works for governments, public sector authorities, industrial and commercial companies, financial institutions, developers and private individuals. The firm delivers solutions that meet our clients’ needs as technically, socially and environmentally appropriate in a timely and cost-effective manner.

SMHB is built on its commitment to quality. This is evidenced by the firm’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification in 1997. The firm has later established its Environmental Management System and Occupational Health and Safety Management System, and obtained ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications in 2020. In 2022, SMHB achieved its ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System certification. The firm is implementing an integrated management system covering the provision of engineering consultancy and project management services including engineering and environmental studies, design and construction supervision.
